Doctoral Educational programs of the School of Information Technology and Engineering

 

The School of IT and Engineering offers two PhD programs:

  1. 8D06101 «Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Management»
  2. 8D06102 «Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence»

The PhD programs focuses on preparing highly qualified scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel for activities that require in-depth fundamental and professional training and knowledge in the field of informatics and computing technology.

The programs are aimed at those who wish to create new more efficient methods of processing and accumulating information, new methods and means of intelligent data processing, instrumental and applied software systems of various classes for automation professional activity in various subject areas and for solving various new classes of problems.

Language of instruction:  English

The Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Management doctoral program currently has one graduation with seven graduates.

Aim of program: fundamental, scientific and professional training of doctoral students. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is conferred by the School of IT and Engineering primarily in recognition of competence in the subject field and the ability to investigate engineering problems independently, resulting in a new contribution to knowledge in the field. The work for the degree consists of engineering research, the preparation of a thesis based on that research, and a program of advanced study in engineering, mathematics, and related physical sciences.

Educational Outcomes:

  • Arguing the choice of basic standards, principles and design patterns, methods, tools and programming languages, including choosing methods and means of building information security systems for modern ICT.
  • Apply mathematical models and methods of various processes.
  • Design of database architecture, software and information systems.
  • Design and develop ergonomic user interfaces.
  • To develop and / or use software, hardware, information, mathematical, functional support of information systems, including algorithms and methods of information security.
  • Extract the necessary information from various sources, including real-time information flows.
  • Solve applied data processing and analysis tasks to identify hidden dependencies in them.
  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis and analytically summarize the results of scientific research using modern scientific and technological achievements, the skills of independent data collection, study, analysis and generalization.

Aim of program: Train IT researchers who have mastered the modern achievements of computer science and artificial intelligence, who are able to formulate and solve complex problems related to statistical modeling, design, development and maintenance of information systems and technologies using artificial intelligence, as well as intelligent data analysis and processing systems in organizational and technical systems.

Characteristics of the educational program:

The educational program 8D06102 "Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence" is focused on the formation of a professional personality of a specialist capable of:

  • interpreting and generalizing deep modern knowledge of the latest theories in the field of software development, creating effective ways to solve computational problems;
  • solving problems in new contexts within broader or related scientific fields related to computer science;
  • independently carry out scientific research in the context of the latest theories, methodologies and technologies;
  • interpret the results of their own scientific research, defend them in scientific and industrial discussions, test them at national and international conferences, in peer-reviewed journals;
  • independently build a further program of their scientific and educational activities.

 

Qualification characteristics of the graduate:

  • Study business problems from an IT perspective
  • Coordinate IT plans and goals with business plans and goals
  • Formulate strategic and tactical recommendations on using IT to improve business efficiency

Admission Process

Admission is conducted on a competitive basis based on the results of the entrance exam in the doctoral program subject area. A minimum score of 75 out of 100 is required.
In case of equal scores, priority is given to the applicant with the highest score in the specialized subject area. Scientific achievements related to the program are also considered, such as:
● Scientific publications (including those in Q1 or Q2 journals indexed in Web of Science / Journal Citation Reports)

● Patents and certificates of scientific development

● Grants, scholarships, diplomas, and awards for research and conference participation

Mandatory requirements for admission:
● Master’s degree

● Passing the PhD entrance exam

● International English proficiency certificate

● KAZTEST certificate (any level, issued by NCT)

● Minimum 9 months of professional work experience

● Certificate of completion of the pedagogical cycle (for holders of a professionally oriented master’s degree)

GRE holders are exempt from writing the essay portion and take only the subject-specific exam block. GRE scores must be submitted during the application and are converted according to VED (internal evaluation system).
Applicants with TOEFL ITP must take an additional English language test prior to the entrance exam. This consists of 100 questions with a maximum score of 100. A minimum of 75 is required to pass.
The additional test is administered by the National Testing Center (NTC) and evaluated as “pass” or “fail.”

12. Entrance fee receipt – 10,000 KZT

Admission to the PhD program on a fee-paying basis is based on the results of the entrance exam in the relevant educational program group. Applicants must score at least 75 out of 100 points.


To be admitted to the PhD program at KBTU, the following requirements must be met:
● Passing the PhD entrance exam

● Holding a Master's degree

● Possessing an international English language proficiency certificate

● Providing a KAZTEST certificate (any level) issued by the National Testing Center (NTC)

● Having at least 9 months of work experience

● Possessing a certificate of completion of the pedagogical cycle (for holders of a Master's degree in a professional field)

If the applicant holds a valid Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) certificate, they are exempt from writing an essay during the entrance exam and will take only the specialized subject test. The GRE scores must be submitted during the exam application and will be converted into the national entrance exam score during the state grant competition.
Applicants with a TOEFL ITP certificate must take an additional English language test prior to the entrance exam. This test includes 100 questions and is scored out of 100 points.
The additional English language test is conducted by the National Testing Center (NTC) at authorized institutions and is evaluated on a "pass"/"fail" basis.
To receive a “pass,” applicants must score at least 75 points.
