Duration of study 3 years
Academic degree Doctor of Technical Sciences

Language of instruction English

Goals and objectives:

The purpose of the educational program is to train highly qualified specialists with deep knowledge in the field of geology and mineral exploration, modern methods of teaching geological disciplines, as well as competencies for solving fundamental and applied problems in research activities. The program is aimed at training specialists who can develop innovative methods of exploration, research and management of mineral deposits, and work effectively both individually and as part of research teams.

The objectives of the educational program are:

  • development of basic and advanced knowledge and skills in geological and geophysical sciences for doctoral students to receive a high-quality education;
  • developing doctoral students ' understanding of the need to use geological analysis and models to solve applied problems;
  • development of systematic and analytical thinking, as well as the ability to conduct research;
  • active participation of doctoral students in scientific projects and research;
  • cooperation with research institutes and universities in Kazakhstan and around the world;
  • creation of educational and research programs together with representatives of industry enterprises.

Professional features:

Exploration geologists analyze and evaluate natural resources using methods that allow them to study the structure of the Earth's crust in detail. The profession combines fundamental knowledge in geology and applied skills, such as seismic exploration and geochemical analysis, which makes it in demand. Modern methods make it possible to obtain more accurate data and forecast deposits, which makes a significant contribution to the development of the mining industry.

Important qualities:

The geologist profession requires an interest in research and an analytical mindset. Doctoral students in the field of geology are responsible for:

  • development and improvement of field exploration and analysis methods;
  • preparation of projects and planning of work at all stages of research;
  • solution of applied tasks and preparation of reports on the results of work;
  • participation in international conferences and monitoring of achievements in geological science;
  • publication of scientific articles and creation of methodological materials for educational purposes.

Theoretical and practical minimum of doctoral studies:

Specialists with an academic master's degree are allowed to participate in the program. Doctoral students should be proficient in modern methods of geological research and specialized programs for data modeling and analysis. In addition, they should be able to:

  • formulate scientific problems and research goals;
  • select research methods for solving specific problems.
  • perform analytical work using modern technologies;
  • analyze and interpret research results.
  • prepare scientific reports and publications.

Educational program prerequisites:

  • Field geology
  • Geophysical research methods

The program provides opportunities for internships abroad and participation in international conferences. Doctoral students master modeling, surface analysis, working with geoinformation systems and management of scientific research.

The program of training specialists in the field of geology and field exploration is based on current scientific achievements, and graduates are in demand in the mining, environmental and research industries, where they are engaged in resource exploration, data analysis and implementation of technologies in production.

Required program component:

  • Geophysical and geochemical exploration methods

Some elective subjects of the program:

  • Seismic survey methods.
  • Modeling of geological processes;
  • Analysis and interpretation of field data;
  • Geoinformation systems in geology;
  • Geochemistry of surface waters;
  • Mineralogy and petrophysics;
  • Fundamentals of ecological geology;
  • Geotectonics.

Admission is conducted on a competitive basis based on the results of the entrance exam in the doctoral program subject area. A minimum score of 75 out of 100 is required.
In case of equal scores, priority is given to the applicant with the highest score in the specialized subject area. Scientific achievements related to the program are also considered, such as:
● Scientific publications (including those in Q1 or Q2 journals indexed in Web of Science / Journal Citation Reports)

● Patents and certificates of scientific development

● Grants, scholarships, diplomas, and awards for research and conference participation

Mandatory requirements for admission:
● Master’s degree

● Passing the PhD entrance exam

● International English proficiency certificate

● KAZTEST certificate (any level, issued by NCT)

● Minimum 9 months of professional work experience

● Certificate of completion of the pedagogical cycle (for holders of a professionally oriented master’s degree)

GRE holders are exempt from writing the essay portion and take only the subject-specific exam block. GRE scores must be submitted during the application and are converted according to VED (internal evaluation system).
Applicants with TOEFL ITP must take an additional English language test prior to the entrance exam. This consists of 100 questions with a maximum score of 100. A minimum of 75 is required to pass.
The additional test is administered by the National Testing Center (NTC) and evaluated as “pass” or “fail.”
