ENGLISH_PRE-INTERMEDIATE (A2)
This course is intended for students of the preparatory program with a low level of English proficiency who enter KBTU. The course is aimed at supporting students as they progress from elementary (A2) to pre-intermediate (B1) and their preparation for an Academic English course. It focuses on the development of the basic skills necessary to access the KBTU curriculum in English: namely, reading, listening skills, speaking and writing skills, in the context of the university program. The course is aimed at improving the level of students' knowledge and their skills in working with important learning strategies and skills that will be necessary for studying at the university, and provides huge opportunities for the development of these skills, along with the enrichment of vocabulary and communicative grammar. The Foundation 1 Preparatory Program course was founded in order to complement the General English course.
ENGLISH _INTERMEDIATE (B1)
The course is designed to familiarize students with the English language for educational purposes. This course focuses on the development of language skills necessary for effective reading, writing, listening and speaking in an educational environment, and is combined with academic and learning skills important for a successful university life. The semester project involves students in conducting mini-studies and case studies that strengthen certain areas of study.
ENGLISH_UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (B2)
This course is offered to students who have scored 4 points on the KELET test and/or 6 or more points on IELTS. The course is designed to familiarize students with the type of English they need to study. The course focuses on the development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, along with learning skills in the field of various topics considered from different angles and from the point of view of various academic fields, on the development of skills for critical consideration of issues presented by the speaker or author, teaching skills for learning and memorizing English and important information.
SPOKEN ENGLISH (B2)
This course is designed for students who want to improve and "polish" spoken English. It aims to provide a wide range of opportunities for speaking on various personal topics and topics of wider social coverage, and to strengthen confidence, fluency and flexibility of speech. It also aims to help students develop awareness of conversational strategies, interactive patterns, and how language is used to construct, reflect, and negotiate in various social contexts. These goals will be achieved through discussions, debates, role–playing games, speeches, presentations and other actions aimed at involving students in the conversation - thus creating opportunities for applying their knowledge in practice. The principle of "Use or lose" is a popular saying in English, but for students with little opportunities for conversational practice in everyday life, this saying will sound like this: "Use or never master". If you don't try to talk, most likely you will never advance beyond the basic level of conversational speech, so PARTICIPATION is MANDATORY! Each action will be accompanied by constructive criticism from the instructor and fellow students.
ACADEMIC READING
This course is elective for Intermediate and Low-Intermediate level students. It is designed to develop students' reading skills, vocabulary building and critical thinking skills. In this course, various texts will be used to develop students' academic reading skills. The texts cover topics related to various fields of activity: technical design, psychology, science and neuroscience, business and marketing, health and medicine, society and social issues. With clear instructions and practice using strategies and reading skills, students will improve their ability to understand reading materials. Also, with the same clear approach to the complex nature of learning and vocabulary replenishment, students will better understand how to comprehend the complex nature of the study of academic words. The main focus will be on the development and application of reading skills in translation, analysis, criticism and defending the ideas that students encountered while reading academic texts.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION AND THE ART OF MAKING PRESENTATIONS
This course is intended for undergraduate students of all major disciplines to obtain a general concept of Intercultural Communication (ICO), both from the point of view of science and a tool for effective communication within the framework of intercultural differences. The current situation on the world labor market, the ability of graduates to enter international arenas in their future professional activities, and the increasing number of contacts with non-native English speakers implies the need for effective communication with representatives of other cultures. The course is also aimed at supporting students' opportunities in their further development of oral and written English language skills, while at the same time increasing their intercultural awareness.
Intercultural communication is addressed when there is a distortion of messages or, in general, a complete misunderstanding due to the different cultural affiliation of the communicants.
This course is an attempt for students to avoid failures in communicating with representatives of different cultures by familiarizing themselves with the basic theoretical foundations and different views on the problem, and through case studies, role-playing games, panel discussions and project work.
