The Project Management PhD Doctoral Program is aimed at meeting the needs of Kazakhstani project management science for economic sectors. While studying in the Project Management Program, doctoral students gain applied knowledge on the specifics of research in project management and study the entire life cycle, specific features and structure of the project. The Project Management Program meets the general standards set by the PMI Institute. It is aimed at masters of scientific and pedagogical direction in the field of project management, management, finance, economics, management, and information technology, who already have a certain scientific profile, and are actively engaged in scientific research, and also have a desire to teach at universities.


Representatives of other specialties can also be enrolled in this program, but in the case of having master's degrees in non-economic educational programs, the admitted doctoral students will have to master the mandatory component of theoretical courses in the Project Management direction of the master's program. For each such case, an individual trajectory for mastering the theoretical part of the mandatory component of the scientific and pedagogical master's degree in the field of "Project Management" is formed.
Training in the "Project Management" Program is carried out on a modular basis within 6 semesters. The theoretical part takes up the first 2 semesters, or 1 year of study within the program, and amounts to 25 ECTS, 10 ECTS of which are for mandatory courses such as "Academic Writing" and "Research Methods". They form the university component of the program. The remaining 15 ECTS are taken in the form of 3 elective courses on the specifics of the "Project Management" Program. Considering that the program is aimed at achieving primarily research goals, most of the time is taken up by the doctoral student's research work (DRW). In the 2nd year of study, in the autumn semester, pedagogical practice is provided, which can be completed by a doctoral student on the basis of the Master's program "Project Management". When studying in the Project Management Program, the main emphasis is on achieving research goals, that is, writing a doctoral dissertation and relevant scientific articles, in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, imposed in Kazakhstan on the implementation of the PhD doctoral program. An important element of training in the program is the doctoral student's commitment to conducting scientific research. Participation in scientific projects, both Grant funding of the Science Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other donor organizations, including projects of foreign partner universities, is encouraged.


The doctoral student is assigned a domestic scientific supervisor and a foreign scientific consultant according to the profile and topic of his doctoral dissertation. The doctoral dissertation and published articles must be within the framework of one scientific direction and include the topic considered by the doctoral student. During the course of training in the program, the doctoral student must visit the partner university at least once, to his foreign scientific consultant.
It is advisable to complete writing the dissertation and scientific articles within the allotted 3 academic years. However, defense is also allowed after the completion of the specified 3 years. This right must be verified with the Requirements of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, imposed in Kazakhstan on the implementation and defense of a doctoral dissertation PhD. Upon completion of the Project Management Program and successful defense, the doctoral student receives the desired scientific degree of Doctor (PhD) of Management and Economics in the field of Project Management.

Studying in the Management Program, doctoral students gain applied knowledge on the specifics of management research, develop additional managerial skills and strengthen their competencies in the field of management in various industries. The Management Program is aimed at masters of scientific and pedagogical direction in the field of management, management, finance, economics, project management, and information technology, who already have a certain scientific profile, and are actively engaged in scientific research, and have a desire to teach at universities.

Admission Process

{spoiler=For State Grant Applicants}

Admission is conducted on a competitive basis based on the results of the entrance exam in the doctoral program subject area. A minimum score of 75 out of 100 is required.
In case of equal scores, priority is given to the applicant with the highest score in the specialized subject area. Scientific achievements related to the program are also considered, such as:
● Scientific publications (including those in Q1 or Q2 journals indexed in Web of Science / Journal Citation Reports)

● Patents and certificates of scientific development

● Grants, scholarships, diplomas, and awards for research and conference participation

Mandatory requirements for admission:
● Master’s degree

● Passing the PhD entrance exam

● International English proficiency certificate

● KAZTEST certificate (any level, issued by NCT)

● Minimum 9 months of professional work experience

● Certificate of completion of the pedagogical cycle (for holders of a professionally oriented master’s degree)

GRE holders are exempt from writing the essay portion and take only the subject-specific exam block. GRE scores must be submitted during the application and are converted according to VED (internal evaluation system).
Applicants with TOEFL ITP must take an additional English language test prior to the entrance exam. This consists of 100 questions with a maximum score of 100. A minimum of 75 is required to pass.
The additional test is administered by the National Testing Center (NTC) and evaluated as “pass” or “fail.”

{spoiler=For Tuition-Based Applicants}

Admission to the PhD program on a fee-paying basis is based on the results of the entrance exam in the relevant educational program group. Applicants must score at least 75 out of 100 points.


To be admitted to the PhD program at KBTU, the following requirements must be met:
● Passing the PhD entrance exam

● Holding a Master's degree

● Possessing an international English language proficiency certificate

● Providing a KAZTEST certificate (any level) issued by the National Testing Center (NTC)

● Having at least 9 months of work experience

● Possessing a certificate of completion of the pedagogical cycle (for holders of a Master's degree in a professional field)

If the applicant holds a valid Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) certificate, they are exempt from writing an essay during the entrance exam and will take only the specialized subject test. The GRE scores must be submitted during the exam application and will be converted into the national entrance exam score during the state grant competition.
Applicants with a TOEFL ITP certificate must take an additional English language test prior to the entrance exam. This test includes 100 questions and is scored out of 100 points.
The additional English language test is conducted by the National Testing Center (NTC) at authorized institutions and is evaluated on a "pass"/"fail" basis.
To receive a “pass,” applicants must score at least 75 points.
